Heavy, as in Heavy Metal.
Heavy, as in not all people who practice yoga are skinny.
Heavy, as in yoga practice and meditation is no freaking walk in the park, son.
Metta as in Meta, Metta, Metal and Mettle.
“Metta” is both a practice and a Buddhist sutra about loving kindness. The first few years after I quit drinking and doing drugs, I got up every morning and read the Metta Sutra and did Metta meditation for a very long list of people and animals far and wide. Metta and getting into recovery both saved and changed my life. I started practicing yoga consistently and shifted to a 100% plant-based diet. I asked for help with my crazy eating behaviors that had gotten even worse when I got sober. Slowly, I was relieved of the desire to abuse myself with binge eating, purging, taking diet pills and compulsively exercising. I began trying to incorporate the principles of loving kindness into all aspects of my life. Except for the times that I really, really want to slap people. Then I’m not so freaking perfect, am I?
May all beings be happy, may all beings be joyous, may all beings be free. May all beings be safe, may all beings be healthy, may all beings be loved. Rinse and repeat, one day at a time.
